"I’ve been getting reports from residents that the mine is on fire. Do you know if that is true?"
Hopefully now the simulation is over, you won't find this comment so terrifying, but in a real situation, it can be and we want you to be prepared. Last week we held the Transmedia Storytelling crisis simulation and the overwhelming feedback has been that it was a key learning experience and very enjoyable. The personal reflections have shown an understanding of the effect individual students had on the overall team effectiveness. Some of the students comments included:
“The simulation created the intensive atmosphere of a real-life crisis in stages and this provided me with the knowledge of how quickly or intense issues in a crisis can occur and to what extent it can intensify. It has taught me to prepare for any type of information that can announce itself at any moment by any means.”
"The simulation provided what I assume to be a very accurate portrayal of a real crisis and provided me the opportunity to be pushed into a very stressful position as leader whilst still having to remain calm for the sake of my team and the situation. This is a skill that will be invaluable to me in the workplace, crisis or not. The effective use of social media to interact with stakeholders whilst maintaining a serious tone to fit the situation is another skill that is incredibly useful."
"Being forced to work with a new group of people and still maintaining effective communications is a skill that can be applied at all times in PR."
"The simulation was an invaluable experience. I feel equipped enough to face a real crisis now that I know that I am capable of managing one. The simulation has more so opened my eyes to the importance of planning for a crisis long before there is a crisis on the horizon."
