We've almost completed our first semester of Transmedia Storytelling and it's been a long semester of hard work, but a worthwhile semester. It's hard to top Jeff Gomez and the Starlight Runner team visiting class, but we tried our best in the final week, showcasing the best student work completed across the semester. I've loved watching students' creativity grow across the semester as they've learnt how to develop a narrative for an organisation or company, and how to develop messages for different transmedia platforms. For a showcase of students' work across the semester, visit the blog here. The crisis simulation assessment was a clear favourite and students gave feedback after the simulation. So what have we learnt about Transmedia Storytelling this semester? Some key insights are:
- There's no point reaching out to a community after something bad has happened, build your communities first
- Everyone in the organisation needs to understand what the story is for it to be effective - transmedia storytelling is for internal and external audiences
- Your audiences and stakeholders can help define, or build, your story - participation is key
- Many situations on social media platforms are unique and need to be looked at case-by-case
- Monitoring is key, and there will be a period (for some situations) where you need to watch before you act – just don’t wait too long!
